CONCAVE & CONVEX

Inspired by ❝ Moby Dick❞ (1851) and ❝ Pinocchio❞ (1940), I modelled a 3D thoracic human cavity (in Blender), symbolizing an essential and universal inner space. Wetland vegetation reinforces the concave effect, while lighting and shadows focus attention toward the centre. This design evokes a contained yet introspective environment, encouraging viewers to interpret and imagine the unknown.
Convex ✳
Convex space is defined by openness and the absence of visible boundaries, exposing rather than containing.
Positioned at an elevated vantage point, the viewer experiences a bird's-eye perspective of an infinite horizon, emphasizing expansion and immensity. Drawing on Georg Simmel's analysis of landscape as a unified open space framed by the gaze, the design explores the viewer's dual role as part of nature and external observer. Non-realistic forms highlight the constructed nature of this simulated infinity, while the interplay of wonder and contemplation evokes a sense of Stimmung, intrinsic to the essence of convex space."
This first project in Unity focuses on designing two distinct virtual spaces, exploring 'concave' and 'convex' as central themes.
By manipulating scale, it redefines spatial perception, moving beyond the limits of human-centric representation to offer a fresh perspective on dimensionality.
